Fans of musical theater, listen up! An exciting event is coming to the Sherbino Theater, one that you may be familiar with. The musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress will soon be opening in Ridgway, this Wednesday, May 14 as a matter of fact. For those of you that have never heard of the production, allow us to shed some light on it.
Once Upon a Mattress originally opened way back in 1958 off-Broadway, with music by American composer Mary Rodgers, lyrics by librettist, singer, songwriter and director Marshall Barer, and its book by Barer, Dean Fuller, and Jay Thompson. The production moved to Broadway the following year where it ran for nearly 250 performances. It would eventually earn a pair of Tony Award nominations for Best Musical and Best Leading Actress.
A sort of retelling of the classic story “The Princess and the Pea”, Once Upon a Mattress takes place in a faraway kingdom where King Sextimus has been rendered mute due to a curse. His dictator-like wife Queen Aggravain controls the kingdom as she seeks to ensure their son Prince Dauntless remains single. Worst of all, no one in the kingdom is allowed to marry until the prince is able to.
