The Fascinating History of Chief Ouray

ouray-2Among the many prominent figures that have played a role in Ouray’s history, Chief Ouray is arguably one of the most important. Largely believed to have been born in 1833 during a meteor shower, his name translates to “The Arrow” in the Ute language. From a young age, Chief Ouray made it his mission to protect his people and maintain peace.

Despite his association with Ouray, Colorado, Chief Ouray wasn’t believed to have been born in Ouray. Instead, his origins are closer to Taos, New Mexico. He was not raised by his parents but instead by a Spanish family which taught him how to speak Spanish as well as English. It wasn’t until several years later that Ouray would learn to speak Ute and Apache.

Though Chief Ouray wasn’t raised by his parents, he did stay in touch with them, eventually moving to Colorado at the age of seventeen to be close to them. His father was the chief of the Uncompahgre Ute tribe despite being Apache. It was in this tribe where Chief Ouray married his first wife, Black Water. Unfortunately, his wife was killed during a Sioux attack. Their son also disappeared during the same attack. Chief Ouray would then go on to marry his second wife Chipeta.
