Every once in a while, it’s fun to take a trip back in time and explore how some of Ouray’s current sights came to be. In this case, it’s the Wright Opera House, which still stands proudly on Main Street to this day.
The history of the Wright Opera House begins in 1881 when the Wright brothers purchased a couple of lots near Main Street. After erecting the Wright Brothers Building, the siblings set their sights on expanding Ouray’s cultural opportunities, seeking to change the city’s seedy image of saloons and houses of ill-repute into something where children and adults could enjoy some entertainment and education. Hence, construction on the Wright Opera House began.
Wright Opera House officially opened its doors on December 4, 1888. As late as the 1890s, it remained one of Ouray’s most notable structures alongside other buildings like the Ouray County Court House and the Beaumont Hotel. Despite its grandeur, it took several years before the Wright Opera House began to see significant activity. After the mining boom began to wane, activities and attendance exploded.
Today, Wright Opera House is on the United States National Register of Historic Places.
