Ouray’s Place in Pop Culture

ouray-2As “The Switzerland of America”, Ouray, Colorado has a distinct, inimitable charm. With an incredibly rich history spanning centuries, it’s no surprise Ouray has popped up on movie screens and more throughout its many years of existence. Let’s explore some notable examples.

You may know the Russian-American philosopher and writer Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum by her much shorter name of Ayn Rand. Rand cemented her place in history when she wrote the bestselling novel Atlas Shrugged. One of the locations in the novel is inspired by Ouray.

Younger audiences may be more familiar with the 2010 remake, but the original True Grit released in 1969 starred the late actor John Wayne and features a scene filmed at the Ouray County Court House, which can still be visited to this day.

Back in the 1980s, actor Richard Dean Anderson starred in his now iconic role of MacGyver, outwitting his foes in the most unusual ways. Ouray makes an appearance in the classic series as the home of Harry, MacGyver’s grandfather.
