Ouray’s Place in History

coloradoDepending on how long you’ve been reading the various updates on our blog, you’ve likely read about how Ouray and the state of Colorado are steeped in a rich history that has spread into multiple types of media, including movies. While Colorado is known for frequently being used as a backdrop on the big screen, it has also been mentioned in some famous books, too.

Russian-American novelist Ayn Rand cemented her place in history after releasing her fourth and final novel Atlas Shruggedwhich is highly regarded as Rand’s magnum opus. The book features a town known as “Galt’s Gulch”, a secret valley hideaway nestled in the Rocky Mountains. Rand’s inspiration for Galt’s Gulch was none other than Ouray, Colorado which she credits with helping her complete her classic novel.

Of course, Ouray is only one example of the several times Colorado has appeared in books. You can read about seventeen other books that have ties to The Centennial State by checking out the “18 must-read books with connections to Colorado” article published in the Denver Post.
