With places like Mouse’s Chocolates offering some magnificent handmade Belgian truffles plus the other delicious bites available that so many locals and tourists have raved about, there is no shortage of spots to indulge in Ouray County. Perhaps that’s why it may surprise you to learn that Ouray County has been deemed one of the healthiest places to live in all of the United States!
That’s right; the respected magazine U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Ouray in second in a list of “High Performing” rural counties. High performing counties are considered those within the upper half based on their economics. The entire list was split into groups beyond just “High Performing”. Also included were “Up and Coming” rural communities.
U.S. News and World Report evaluated well over 2,500 different counties using a multitude of metrics to determine which 500 counties would ultimately make its Healthiest Communities list. In terms of this overall list not taking into account economics or size, Ouray County still managed to crack the top ten, coming in at ninth place. Factors used to determine the list included environment, population health, education, and more.
