Getting Around Ouray

milliondollarhighway

By now you probably have some idea of what Ouray is like. The town is small and relatively isolated, shrouded among majestic mountains and a scenery that is unquestionably picturesque. This relative remoteness of the town means future visitors should be aware of a few things in regards to Ouray’s transportation.

For starters, the closest airport to Ouray is Montrose Regional Airport about forty miles away to the north. It also serves as the nearest airport to the ski areas located near Telluride. Ouray has a single paved road (US 550). This road makes up a portion of what’s called Million Dollar Highway, a 25mile route that’s part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. Depending on who’s telling the story, you may hear a different version as to how the highway’s name came to be. One of these legends says the highway was given its name because that’s how much it cost to build in the 1920s. The fill dirt allegedly has a million dollars worth of gold ore.

If it’s your first time visiting Ouray, welcome! You’re in for a quiet retreat you won’t soon forget. If you’re planning on driving, please use caution as many of the roads are winding and run near cliffs. Be sure to stop and enjoy the incredible scenery!
