Discover Colorado’s Many Ghost Towns

rebelheartWhen you’re visiting Ouray, the array of things to do is seemingly endless. One activity that you may want to prioritize is exploring Colorado’s numerous relics of history, better known as the ghost towns. To get you started, here are a couple of suggestions that don’t require the use of a four wheel drive vehicle.

Joker Tunnel and Boarding House is located on famous Milion Dollar Highway less than two miles south of Ironton, another famous ghost town. Established in the early 1900s for the purposes of mine water draining, the gorgeous boarding house still stands to this day and serves as a reminder of the days when mining was all the rage.

Located at nearly 12,000 feet of elevation to the south of the town of Telluride, Alta was once an active mining camp but curiously, was never fully incorporated as a town. Back when mining gold was all the rage, it was home to about 100 people. Should you visit, you can see some of Alta’s remnants including cabins and outhouse buildings. The nearby lake is also worth a visit.
