Did You Miss the Hardrock 100?

hardrock100Did you miss this year’s Hardrock 100? In case you’re unfamiliar with the event, allow us to enlighten you. Officially known as the Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run, this event is an “ultramarathon” which, as its name alludes to, involves a whopping 100.5 mile length. On top of its massive length, the marathon also involves a 33,000+ foot climb and another 33,000+ descent, which means participants experience an elevation change of more than 65,000 feet!

Hardrock 100 participants begin and end their run over in neighboring Silverton, traveling through Telluride, our own Ouray, and Sherman, a ghost town. The run is held every year in early July and has remained a Colorado tradition since 1992., with 1995 and 2005 being the exceptions. Instead of the typical race that ends with crossing a finish line, runners must “kiss the Hardrock”, a painted image of a ram’s head found on a large piece of stone mining debris. Considering the demanding run, Hardrock 100 is geared towards experienced runners seeking a formidable challenge.

This year’s Hardrock 100 took place this past weekend. If you’re feeling up for the challenge, it’s never too early to start training for next year’s event.
