Among the various mountain passes found in and around Ouray, Colorado, Red Mountain Pass is among the most notorious. It’s treacherous, dangerous, and is not at all intended for beginner off-roaders. In fact, navigating Red Mountain Pass is so dangerous, it remained closed since March 3 due to the several feet of snow dumped onto it by a series of avalanches.
For those wishing to brave Red Mountain Pass, the good news is that after much work involving bulldozers, helicopters, snow blowers, and several storm delays, it is once again open to the public. However, there are a few things to be aware of. For starters, practicing caution is still a major priority. There remains the possibility of ice and rocks to fall on the road and there will likely be equipment on the road as workers diligently focus on clearing out snow that accumulates.
Are you thinking about taking on Red Mountain Pass? If you have the skills and a passion for off-roading, it’s a risk with some truly spectacular rewards. Even if you aren’t up for such a high degree of challenge, there are other trails and passes that are easier for beginners.
