The High Flying Black Swift

blackswiftIn keeping with our recent theme of exploring some of the local wildlife, we’re shifting our focus back to birds this time and taking a closer look at the American black swift, or simply the black swift. Their name comes from their appearance, with plumage typically being dark shades of gray. When these birds are in flight, they almost look like airborne cigars of sorts due to their long, slender, and curved wings.

Black swift nests are typically found near areas where there is water or dampness, such as waterfalls, rivers, or cliffs. They prefer darker or shady environments that are inaccessible to protect themselves from predators as well as curious humans. If you’ve ever spotted a black swift, you may have noticed the soaring heights it reaches when flying. It is only when they’re flying that black swifts forage, setting their sights on insects that are caught with their wide bills.

When attempting to court a fellow black swift, the bird will perform aerial chases to attract its suitor. In fact, the entire mating process takes place in mid-air. Here’s another fun fact: a group of black swifts goes by various names besides flock. They are also referred to as a “swoop” a “box”, or perhaps most unusually, a “screaming frenzy”.
