Among the various species of bears, the black bear found here in North America is considered the most common. What you may not know is that despite its name, black bear doesn’t necessarily mean these bears are all black. Some of the ones you’ll find here in Colorado may have brown or even blonde fur, though these are rare.
The black bear is generally an omnivore and they are about three feet tall when they are standing on all four feet. They can weigh over 250 pounds and they can live for about twenty to thirty years. In terms of their relationship with Ouray, the bears tend to make their home over in the San Juan Mountains. With their short claws, they are very good climbers. Despite their large size, black bears can reach top speeds of about 24 miles per hour!
Despite their fearsome appearance, black bears prefer to keep to themselves and they are not necessarily aggressive towards human by nature. As fantastic as it is to spot one, however, it is imperative to remember that these are wild animals. Hence, if you do spot one, keep your distance, snap those Facebook and Instagram pictures from afar, and respect their territory. Do not approach a black bear under any circumstances.
