For those of you that have read some of our previous blogs, you may have heard us mention Yankee Boy Basin. Very popular among those going off-roading, the alpine basin lies right here in Ouray County within the San Juan Mountains. The basin is also protected within Uncompahgre National Forest.
If you’ve never been to Yankee Boy Basin and you also happen to be a nature lover, you’re going to absolutely love the experience! Besides the sweeping views, it is particularly renowned for the stunning display of wildflowers that bloom beautifully during the springtime. True to their name, these types of flowers are not intentionally seeded or planted.
For those that are visiting Ouray, Yankee Boy Basin is practically a must-see. It can be accessed via a dirt four wheel drive road that extends from Ouray all the way to the historic Camp Bird Mine, a famous gold mine found within the Sneffels-Red Mountain-Telluride mining district. As you’re exploring the basin you’re going to come across largely abandoned campgrounds. You may also spot deer, birds of prey, and maybe even a black bear.
