Back in the late 1800s, Durango was founded and it originally began its life as a “company” town for the now historic Denver and Rio Grande Railway (D&RG). In keeping with the D&RG tradition, Durango’s name was intended to be a reflection of General Palmer’s ultimate goal of extending the railroad beyond the Rio Grande River into Mexico. Perhaps not surprisingly, Durango’s name is derived from a Mexican city.
Today, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a historic site anyone can visit to get a glimpse into the past. It’s even more popular during the holiday season thanks to The Polar Express, based on the classic book by Chris Van Allsburg which was also made into a movie. The entire family can hop a ride on the steam train and take a magical journey to visit the North Pole as they ride along with a cast of holiday characters while sipping on some hot chocolate and enjoying the original story. On the way back to Durango, the celebration continues with Christmas carols and more fun.
The Polar Express ride will stick around until January 3, 2019. Make sure to book early as it tends to be really popular.
