Let’s kick things off with Silverton Mountain, a ski resort close to the historic mining town of the same name which is located under an hour away not far south of Ouray. The mountain terrain is aimed at skiers with experience. It is particularly notable for its heli-skiing, which is intended solely for expert skiers.
Not far from Silverton is Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a federally designated National Historic Landmark that’s been around since 1881 and continues to regularly operate hundreds of years later. Events are frequently held at the railroad during the year. You’ll likely have to drive for a while to get to it from Ouray, but the experience and its rich history are more than worth the drive.
