Back in the 1870s, the stampede for gold changed the face of the nation. Towns sprung up overnight for the miners who came West to seek their fortune. The San Juan Mountains are rich with gold and silver, so miners came here. Ouray was one of the towns that sprang up for the miners.
Ouray wasn’t the only town serving miners. Silverton, Telluride, and Lake City all have mining town roots. They survived, but many of the smaller towns didn’t after the mining boom died down.
The miners left their mark on the land by leaving behind many abandoned mines and mountain trails. The Red Mountain Mining District south of Ouray has thousands of mines. The abandoned mines might sound charming, but don’t enter them – they’re hazardous, and some are blocked off from the public. A mine tour is your best bet at going inside of a mine.
The Bachelor-Syracuse Mine Tour is north of Ouray, and it will take you 1500 feet into Gold Mountain. You can pan for gold and learn about the lifestyles of 1800s miners. You can also check out the Old Hundred Mine Tour, where you can take a tram inside the mine and see old mining equipment.
