While we may discuss Ouray as that’s where we’re located, the rest of Colorado is as much a treasure trove of discoveries as Ouray is. For today’s blog, we’re focusing on ghost towns throughout Colorado. Just like those near Ouray, they provide a rich glimpse into the state’s engrossingly extensive history.
We’ll begin with Independence found near Independence Pass. Like many of Colorado’s treacherous paths suited to experienced drivers, Independence Pass was once used by stagecoaches traveling between Aspen and Leadville during the 1800s. As for the ghost town of Independence itself, it didn’t last very long yet its remnants linger.
If you’re looking for a ghost town that’s surprisingly well-preserved, look no further than St. Elmo located to the west of Buena Vista. The ghost town is accessible via a standard automobile or you can use an ATV. Don’t forget to drop by Tin Cup while you’re there. The town was notorious for its sheriffs whose fates often ended in deaths.
If you can make it close to the Continental Divide, you can visit the remote town of Carson located at 12,000 feet of elevation. During its heyday, it was known for its inaccessibility and the harsh winters. Because of this inaccessibility, it is surprisingly well-preserved.
