Ouray, Colorado is full of historic sights and one of these is the Wright Opera House, one of Ouray County’s many historic and cultural sights. In fact, it is currently listed in the United States Register of Historic Places.
The opera house is currently in the middle of a major $1.5 million facelift, aimed at returning the structure to its former glory. Supporters are looking to expand its offerings, allowing it to host a broader range of events and productions. Some of the changes in store include ADA friendly restrooms, a larger lobby with a concession stand, and a retractable auditorium wall. These changes will also allow the opera house to generate funds by hosting weddings, private parties, and receptions.
Also known as Wright’s Hall, the Wright Opera House was built way back in the late 1800s. For years, it served as multi-use building for various community events and presentations once Colorado’s mining craze died down and performances ended. Fast forward several decades to 2000 when the structure was finally put to good use again, undergoing a conversion into a movie theater. However, the movie theater was relatively short lived, lasting a mere six years. Since then, Wright Opera House has served as a performing arts center, hosting dance productions every year.
