If you consider yourself of a history aficionado, arguably few places match the rich levels of fascinating as Ouray, Colorado. From its mines to the remnants of the ghost towns that were once teeming with those seeking fortune and fame, there is much to admire in and around Ouray.
One sight that’s worth visiting is the classic Ouray County Courthouse which hasn’t changed much since it was built way back in 1888. Locally built by Frank Carney, the edifice is an unusual fusion of architectural styles, largely Queen Anne and Romanesque. The first floor is home to the county clerk and treasurer offices, and it has remained that way since the day it opened. The long wide central hall is used to showcase numerous historic photographs snapped throughout the county. The courthouse’s second floor is where you’ll find the 40′ by 56′ district courtroom and its 18′ ceiling. The large arched windows allow plenty of natural light. This room has many classic furnishings.
In 1976, the courthouse was made bigger after an extension was added to the southeast side. The building attached to the back of the courthouse originally served as the county jail. The jail is now used as office space for the County Sheriff’s Department.
