When most people think of railroads, chances are they immediately think of names like Amtrak. At one point in Colorado’s history, railroads were the primary method of transport, especially around the state’s mountainous regions. The historic Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad debuted in the 1900s and you can still see it to this day.
If you’d like to enrich yourself further in the history of railroads, you may want to set aside some time tomorrow or this week to visit nearby Ridgway. The Ridgway Railroad Museum will kick off its Ouray County Railroad Days, a celebration of the county’s rich railroad heritage. Guided tours, a symposium, and talks will all be part of the experience.
The event begins with the Silverton Railroad day hike at Red Mountain which consists of a guided, narrated hike beginning at the mountain summit and ending at the townsite of Guston. Some of the sights participants will come across include the Treasury Tunnel branch, National Belle Mine, and more.
Ouray County Railroad Days starts tomorrow, September 21st and concludes until Sunday, September 24th. It’s definitely worth checking out!
