Today, Ouray, Colorado is a small town with a virtually global reputation. It’s also one of the most “Instagrammable” towns thanks to its picturesque fusion of classic sights, majestic landscapes, and an invitingly refreshing small town vibe. For those that like to delve deeper into Ouray’s roots, how the town emerged into what it is today is just as fascinating.
The prospect of finding gold and silver is what drove miners to establish Ouray which at one point was better known for being home to mules and horses than human beings. Prospectors descended upon the town in the late 1800s, eventually opening Camp Bird Mine in 1897 which would go on produce over 150,000 ounces of gold by the early 1900s. At its peak, over twenty mines were active throughout Ouray.
By the time 1877 came around, Ouray had officially incorporated itself and was home to more than 1,000 residents. The town’s name came from Chief Ouray of the Utes, a Native American tribe. The Denver & Rio Grande Railway was a major development when it opened in 1887 and remained in operation until modern methods of transportation such as trucks and automobiles caused its traffic to decline. September 14, 1930, was the day the railway had its last scheduled passenger train.
