It’s often said that one of the best ways to stay in shape, burn calories, and ease the stresses of the day away is to get up and dance. Salsa is a popular form of dance known for being a nightclub, ballroom, or festival staple. Depending on the style, a dancer will shift his or her weight by stepping while the rest of the upper body stays level. This shifting weight is what causes the hip-shaking action that’s become one of the trademarks of salsa.
Salsa’s origins lie in the Caribbean where it evolved from other common Cuban dance forms such as the cha cha cha, mambo, and Cuban Son. Similar to other Latin dance styles, salsa has undergone numerous variations over the years, incorporating elements from other dance styles. As for its name, there is no definite answer regarding where it originated, with beliefs ranging from a term invented by record labels to a word shouted by musicians.
Salsa is not hard to learn and it’s hard to resist once you’re on the dance floor. The Sherbino Theater over in Ridgway is hosting a Latin Fever Salsa Night with the vocal talents of Alberto Mejia tomorrow night kicking off at 6:30 pm! The fee is only $8 and you can bring your friends along. It should be lots of fun!
