The next time you visit the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, you may notice the construction of a new sign courtesy of a talented team of Ouray, Colorado fourth graders. The group raised more than $500 to fund the creation of a sign that will be displayed near the pool’s fish pond. All of the research regarding the fish pond was done by the class itself.
For those that don’t live near Ouray but wish to enrich themselves with the fish pond’s history, allow us to provide a brief summary. Born on September 20, 1846, Francis Carney spent his childhood in New York before moving to Ouray at the age of eighteen. After spending some time working as a bricklayer, Carney worked his way up in his career to eventually become a Ouray County Commissioner, establishing a political career.
The brickyard where Francis Carney once worked was at one point going to be used by the government for agricultural purposes, but Francis fought to keep it. When it closed in the early 1900s, it found new life as a fish pond which is still intact to this day and remains a piece of Ouray’s already rich history.
