Last time we talked about Colorado’s ghost towns that you can visit by driving a regular passenger car. Today we’re switching things up and focusing on some of the more remote ghost towns that will require the use of a four wheel drive vehicle. Feeling adventurous? Read on.
Located at over 11,000 feet of elevation in a glacial cirque with the ominous name of Savage Basin, Tomboy Mine was established way back in 1880. At one point, it was home to over 800 residents but its population dwindled by the 1920s after ore reserves began to run dry. However, it managed to produce millions of dollars worth of gold before it was abandoned. Reaching it poses danger and may prove difficult, so only visit it if you are an experienced driver.
Tomboy Mine may be tucked away at a high altitude, but it is usurped by the even higher Governor Basin located at more than 12,000 feet of elevation. If you visit, the treacherous trek will reward you with some fantastic sights including the Mountain Top Mine boarding house which still stands.
