Off-roading may be what Ouray tends to be well-known for, but those who live there and have visited are aware there is much more to it than just exploring the mountains in an off-road vehicle. The Ouray Perimeter Trail is another must do experience if you’re a fan of hiking.
You can start the Ouray Perimeter Trail from multiple spots, but the unofficial “entrance” is the one over by the Ouray Visitor’s Center, just north of the downtown area. First timers or those just getting their hiking feet wet are encouraged to tackle the trail in a clockwise direction. As you make your way through the trail, you’ll be treated to views of Ouray’s Main Street plus the soaring 11,000+ feet peaks of Hayden Mountain. There are some steep drop off areas and narrow stretches which pose a risk, so it may be best not to bring children along.
Among the many highlights of Ouray Perimeter Trail is Cascade Falls, one of seven different waterfalls. It’s a gorgeous sight particularly during the spring and early summer season when the water volume is considerably higher.
