For nature lovers, The River’s Edge Motel Lodge & Resort is something akin to paradise. The mountains provide a great backdrop and there are a wealth of natural sights to explore. Today we’ll be taking a closer look at Uncompahgre National Forest.
Uncompahgre National Forest covers over 950,000 acres, spanning multiple counties including Ouray, San Juan, Montrose, Gunnison, and more. Exploring the boundaries, visitors will eventually find the Uncompahgre Plateau. There is a trio of alpine wilderness areas within the forest known as Lizard Head, Uncompahgre, and Mount Sneffels.
Jeep enthusiasts, hikers, and sightseers are frequently found in Uncompahgre National Forest thanks to its varied climate and the lack of crowds. It’s also quite popular for scenic driving, especially Million Dollar Highway. Intrepid visitors can also explore the various dirt roads, many of which were used as mining roads and date as far back as the 1800s. For those that prefer something easier to drive on, there are also plenty of paved roads like the Alpine Loop and San Juan Skyway.
Definitely take some time to visit Uncompahgre National Forest the next time you’re in Ouray!
