Ouray has many notable names in its rich, engrossing history. Chief Ouray of the Ute tribe, for example, has the prestigious honor of being Ouray, Colorado’s namesake. And then there is Thomas Walsh, an Irish-American miner whose ties to Ouray are worth exploring.
Thomas Walsh emigrated to the United States in the 1800s, eventually becoming a successful carpenter. During the famous gold rush, Walsh sought his own fame and fortune and soon became a gold mining expert. His carefully researched and methodical approach to gold mining would result in Walsh discovering the famous Camp Bird Gold Mine near Ouray which, at the time, produced $5,000 a day in ore. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $151,000 daily. Walsh would go on to amass a fortune equivalent to about $90 million.
There is much to Thomas Walsh’s story, including his ties to one of the most famous (and supposedly cursed) jewels in the world. This Thursday, the Ouray County Museum is presenting an exhibit titled “The Legendary Walsh Family of Ouray” where you can learn more. The presentation begins at 10 am until 4:30 pm.
