With the profusion of natural and historical sights to explore, Ouray is a sightseeing paradise. To get there, however, you’re probably going to need to take U.S. 550.
Also known as Million Dollar Highway, US 550 remains the sole paved road leading in and out of Ouray. It extends for more than twenty miles and even manages to somewhat parallel the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Even though it’s generally referred to as Million Dollar Highway in its entirety, the name is meant to signify a twelve-mile portion that runs to the south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge, eventually leading to the top of Red Mountain Pass. This stretch is not for the inexperienced as it’s comprised of narrow lanes, steep cliffs, and a lack of guardrails.
Million Dollar Highway is only a part of the experience that makes visiting Ouray such a memorable one. From the trails and mountain passes to its mines and ghost towns, it’s a sight to behold. If you’re ready to explore what it’s all about, we’ll happily provide the accommodations.
