We’ve discussed a lot of ghost towns found near Ouray, but today we’re going to shed a little more light on Ironton Park. Part of the Red Mountain Mining District, it is located near Route 550 less than ten miles south of Ouray.
As with the majority of Colorado’s ghost towns, visiting Ironton Park generally involves using dirt roads, so you may wish to consider renting or bringing along a four-wheel drive vehicle. The area is littered with remnants of former small buildings that were once full of activity before they were abandoned. Today, you’ll find a couple camping spots dispersed throughout Ironton.
Located on one side of Ironton Park is Red Mountain Creek which, along with the ghost town itself, is a picture-worthy experience if you’re looking to soak up as many of the historic and natural sights scattered throughout Colorado. While you’re in the Red Mountain, you may also wish to explore the various trails.
Ironton Park is only one of many ghost towns waiting to be discovered and explored. Adventure awaits!
