Ouray, Colorado may be known for its thrilling activities like off-roading but if you’ve read previous blogs we’ve posted, you’ve probably also noticed that despite its relatively small size, it has an extremely rich and fascinating history. Instead of telling you what the latest thrill activities are, we’re telling you about the ongoing exhibits happening over at the Ouray County Museum that will take you deeper into Ouray’s history.
One of these exhibits is “Women’s Work Is Never Done. Homemaking in the San Juans”. True to its name, the exhibit is a fascinating showcase of the lives led by women in the 19th and 20th centuries. Specifically, it focuses on the lives of the women married to the miners that once flocked to Ouray in search of fortune. For those of you that have ever wondered what a child’s bed or a handmade quilt looked like in the 1800s, the exhibit will be quite the engrossing experience.
Also worth checking out is the “History of Climbing in the San Juan Mountains” exhibit which, as you might guess, takes a closer look at the mountain range and the many famous climbers that once tackled the mountains back when today’s modern climbing equipment did not exist.
