littlebighorn

The flora and fauna in Ouray, Colorado and beyond is truly incredible and richly varied, which is a major plus for nature enthusiasts or anyone who wants to get a glimpse of fascinating animals and take some fascinating photos. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at one of these animals: the bighorn sheep, which is also the state animal.

True to its name, the bighorn sheep is named after its large, curved horns which can weigh up to a whopping thirty pounds. The sheep itself is also quite formidable, with some weighing as much as 300 pounds. Females are known as ewes while males are called rams. The ewes are identifiable by their horns, which are typically shorter than those of males. The bighorn sheep you may encounter in or near the Rocky Mountains are among the largest found anywhere with males and females weighing as much as 500 or 200 pounds, respectively.

Bighorn sheep are found in large herds but these herds do not typically have a leader. However, they will attempt to establish dominance just before the arrival of mating season arrives, Male bighorn sheep have an unusually cordial method of competition. The pair of competitors will walk away from each other before turning to face one another and then lunging into a headbutt. It’s almost like the way men used to settle duels during the 18th century.
