Last time we discussed the history of the Wright Opera House. As a venue still hosting events, today we’re highlighting one of the upcoming musical acts set to perform at the historic place. In this case, that musical act is Jayme Stone’s Folklife.
Comprised of members Jayme Stone, Moira Smiley, Sumaia Jackson, and Joe Phillips, Folklife is known for reintroducing classic musical treasures to newer generations through modern interpretations. Creole calypsos, Appalachian dance tunes, and Sea Island spirituals are all given modern twists through the musical stylings of the folk genre.
When they aren’t performing concerts, the band also hosts educational programs centered on traditional music. Musical as well as non-musically inclined students are encouraged to participate by signing and experiencing the music and they are also taught about the rich history and heritage of American Roots music traditions. The band has worked with grade school students and it has also spearheaded workshops in notable institutions such as the Berklee College of Music.
Folklife’s self-titled album is currently available through various retailers including iTunes, Amazon, and more. The band will perform this Saturday at the Wright Opera House on October 21st.
