When you aren’t busy enjoying the serene ambiance of The River’s Edge Motel Lodge & Resort, chances are you’ll probably be out exploring the majesty of Ouray and the neighboring areas. Thankfully there is a wealth of places to explore, and we would like to shed a little light on some of the highlights worth visiting.
We’ll begin with Silverton Mountain, a ski resort near the historic mining town of the same name which is located less than an hour to the south of Ouray. The mountain has terrain aimed at experienced skiiers. It is particularly unique for its heli-skiing, which is strictly for expert skiers. Silverton Mountain is open Thursday through Sunday from December through April.
Also near Silverton is Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a federally designated National Historic Landmark that opened way back in 1881 and remains in operation to this day. Events are frequently held at the railroad throughout the year. It requires a bit of driving to reach it from Ouray, but the experience is definitely worth it.
