There are so many different things you can do in Ouray, you’re bound to find something you and everyone else in your party can enjoy. Whether you know it as trekking or its more familiar name of hiking, the San Juan Mountains are home to fascinating trails waiting to be explored. We’ll be taking a look at a few in today’s blog.
For those that have done any kind of hiking, Box Cañon Waterfall & Park is beginner friendly. This geological wonder is close to Canyon Creek and is one of those sights you’ll likely be highly impressed by. When it comes to the “box” portion, it is an officially protected habitat by the National Audubon Society and it is also where you’ll find the endangered Black Swift Bird. This hike can be as short as fifteen minutes if you don’t make stops but you’re probably going to take several minutes here and there to capture some of the gorgeous scenery.
The Perimeter Trail provides a greater challenge as it will take significantly (roughly two and a half hours) to traverse. The trail encompasses six miles and will wind through scenic sights such as Cascade Falls, the Potato Patch, and more.
Those that have gone trekking or hiking in the past and consider themselves adventurous may wish to check out Old Horsethief Trail. The four to five-hour trek starts about 100 yards north of the Ouray Visitor Center. Hikers will come across Skyrocket Creek and Bridal Veil Creek before seeing a multitude of mines.
