We’ve previously discussed some of the history of Ouray, but today we’d like to expand our horizons on focus on Ouray County as a whole. Just like Ouray, the county is rich in history and provides a wealth of fascinating facts for those who want to delve into its colorful past.
Ouray County was “born” on January 18, 1877 from San Juan County. It was the first county designated by the Colorado State Legislature and it was named after Ute Indian Chief Ouray. Mount Ouray in the Sawatch Mountain Range is also named after the chief. The following month, Ouray itself was split in two, part of it becoming San Miguel County.
The Ouray County Courthouse was built just before the start of the 1900s. It is located on the corner of 6th Avenue and 4th Street in Ouray and is recognized as a contributing property of the Ouray Historic District. Speaking of historic, the structure is also on the National Register of Historic Places. If you’ve ever seen the 1969 western film True Grit starring John Wayne, you may have noticed the courthouse in the background.
