ouray_colorado_from_perimeter_trail-1Ouray, Colorado’s may have a “small town” vibe yet its reputation is practically worldwide. It’s also known for being one of those places that make for great Instagram photos thanks to its immaculate unification of classic sights, superior landscapes, and friendly people. For those of you looking to dive a little deeper into Ouray’s origins, how it turned into the tourist attraction it is today remains just as fascinating.

Rich stories of finding fame and fortune with gold and silver is what attracted numerous miners to found Ouray. At one point, its claim to fame was for being home to mules and horses than human beings. It was during the late 1800s that prospectors visited Ouray, eventually setting up Camp Bird Mine in 1897 which would go on produce more than 150,000 ounces of gold by the time the 1900s arrived. During its peak, there were over twenty mines in operation throughout Ouray.

By the time 1877 arrived, Ouray was officially incorporated and well over 1,000 people had chosen to call it their home. The town’s name was derived from Chief Ouray of the Utes, a Native American tribe. The Denver & Rio Grande Railway became a huge notable development when its doors opened in 1887 and it continued to operate until contemporary means of transportation such as trucks and automobiles led to a reduction in its traffic. September 14, 1930 became a notable day as the railway operated its last scheduled passenger train.
