For those visiting Ouray, Colorado for the first time, one of the most exciting things to do is explore the town and all of the neighboring areas that are practically bursting with sights to explore. For those looking to do some sightseeing beyond Ouray, our neighbor Telluride is worth a visit.
Telluride is the most populous town in San Miguel County and it is located barely an hour away to the southwest of Ouray. At one time a silver mining camp, the town was originally known as “Columbia” when it was founded in 1878. The name was short-lived as it was changed to avoid any potential confusion with the town of the same name in California. The name Telluride is derived from the gold telluride minerals found in various parts of Colorado. Amusingly enough, there are no such minerals located in the town of Telluride.
Residing in a box canyon, Telluride is surrounded by majestically imposing forested mountains and cliffs. Explore a little and you’ll find the beautiful Bridal Veil Falls towards the canyon head. Visitors can also explore numerous ruins that once served as mining operations, and there is also a complimentary gondola to check out that can be used to visit the town of Mountain Village.
